PCD vs. Conventional Spray Drying

Berghausen has just completed the installation of its PCD, the newest generation of pulse combustion spray dryers. Our PCD offers significant advantages over conventional technologies.

Our PCD makes a better powder at a lower cost. Powders are better because they are uniformly atomized and quickly dried, with minimal degradation…particularly with sensitive products. Our dryer is much more efficient because it uses a dramatically higher "delta-t" and an intensely turbulent mixing environment for atomized particles and drying air.

A convenient way to understand pulse combustion drying is to compare it with nozzle spray drying. In a nozzle-type spray dryer, the liquid is atomized by accelerating it through a nozzle at high pressure. The atomized droplets then decelerate through warm, low velocity gases, giving up moisture. In a pulse combustion spray dryer, the gas and liquid environments are reversed: the very hot drying gases are accelerated in a resonating pulse combustion engine, and the liquid is pumped into the gas stream at low pressure (about 1 psi) and very low velocity. The hot, high velocity, pulse wave fronts instantly atomize the liquid or slurries. Evaporation is very rapid due to high temperature differentials and intense mixing.

The main differences between pulse and conventional spray dryers are in atomization and heat transfer; the differences are dramatic:

Dryer Characteristics PCD Typical Nozzle-TypeSpray Dryer Typical Rotary-Disk Spray Dryer
Atomization Gas Dynamic -No shear High Pressure Orifice -High shear Moderate shear
Feed Pump Low Pressure (1 psi) High Pressure Low Pressure
Feed Delivery to Dryer Open Pipe Precision Orifice VariousWheel Types
Evaporative Heat At point of atomization Remote, ducted to drying chamber Remote, ducted todrying chamber
Mixing of heat & droplets Rapid and Complete Slow Slow
Heat transfer rate High Relatively Low Relatively Low
